BBSRC Response Mode Research Grants – 02/10/19

Response mode research grants

Funding for unsolicited, investigator-led research proposals that meet the remit and mission of the BBSRC, including research projects, new facilities or infrastructure provision, pilot projects, proof of concept studies, equipment purchase and research networks.

The BBSRC Responsive Mode grants are awarded in response to unsolicited research proposals in any area relevant to BBSRC’s mission. Proposals are encouraged within the broader remit of the BBSRC Strategic Plan, with the aim to increase the impact of bioscience funded by BBSRC by concentrating on specific problems, developing capacity and capability in the science base or strengthening links with partners and knowledge exchange. As a general principle, BBSRC allocates as much research grant funding as possible in responsive mode.

Submitted proposals can be for basic, strategic or applied research projects:

  • Basic: research conducted for the advancement of knowledge.
  • Strategic: research conducted with the expectation that it will form a broad base of knowledge likely to underpin the solution of recognised or expected current or future problems.
  • Applied: research that is directed primarily at addressing a specific, practical problem.

BBSRC Industry Partnership Awards – 02/10/19

This scheme encourages and supports collaboration between academic research groups and industry.

IPAs are academic-led, responsive mode grants that have significant industrial involvement and industry partner(s) contributes in cash at least equivalent to 10% of the full project costs. Additional in-kind contributions from industry are welcome but do not count against the industry contribution. Funding is only available for organisations eligible for BBSRC support.

Applications are assessed by Research Committees, alongside standard applications, using the same criteria. IPA projects are normally funded in preference to standard grants of equivalent scientific merit.

BBSRC Stand-Alone LINK – 02/10/19

‘Stand-alone’ LINK

This scheme supports collaborative, pre-competitive scientific research conducted by industrial and academic partners, where the industrial partner provides part of the full economic cost.

The Stand-alone LINK Scheme funds collaborative research projects that involve at least one company/industrial partner and one science-base partner. Support is allocated to pre-competitive research that would not be undertaken in the proposed form without LINK support where some of the cost of the project is from the industrial partner.

Benefits for company partners include:

  • Financial support for the project.
  • Closer relationships with the science base.
  • Possibility of recruiting appropriately trained staff at the end of the project.

BBSRC will fund up to a maximum of 50% of full economic costs (fECs). Once the contribution value from the industrial partner is removed from the fEC, BBSRC will pay 80% of the remaining amount with the final 20% being funded from institutional core funds.
