Response mode research grants
Funding for unsolicited, investigator-led research proposals that meet the remit and mission of the BBSRC, including research projects, new facilities or infrastructure provision, pilot projects, proof of concept studies, equipment purchase and research networks.
The BBSRC Responsive Mode grants are awarded in response to unsolicited research proposals in any area relevant to BBSRC’s mission. Proposals are encouraged within the broader remit of the BBSRC Strategic Plan, with the aim to increase the impact of bioscience funded by BBSRC by concentrating on specific problems, developing capacity and capability in the science base or strengthening links with partners and knowledge exchange. As a general principle, BBSRC allocates as much research grant funding as possible in responsive mode.
Submitted proposals can be for basic, strategic or applied research projects:
- Basic: research conducted for the advancement of knowledge.
- Strategic: research conducted with the expectation that it will form a broad base of knowledge likely to underpin the solution of recognised or expected current or future problems.
- Applied: research that is directed primarily at addressing a specific, practical problem.
